They say all good things come to an end. And so the One Change: Fuel campaign came to an end on September 28 with a volunteer appreciation party at Bella Vista restaurant. “It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to give a little something back to our volunteers,” says Deb Gleason, One Change: Fuel Campaign Manager. “Without our volunteers this campaign wouldn’t be possible so we wanted to thank everyone involved.” With the help of over 100 volunteers, the One Change: Fuel campaign saw the delivery of 13,000 free digital tire gauges to Ottawa residents helping motorists save fuel, save money and help the planet. EMC Kanata – One Change: Fuel reaches its final destination at Canadian Tire in Kanata

Friday, October 2, 2009, Ottawa

Leaves are changing colour. Days are getting shorter, and pumpkins have started appearing at local markets. These are all sure signs that summer is winding down and with it, our One Change: Fuel pilot campaign. But we weren’t about to let the occasion go by unmarked!

On September 20, the One Change: Fuel team gathered for its final event: the Kanata Canadian Tire fuel efficiency clinic. When we showed up at the store, manager Adam Stuart told us that about 50 people had shown up the day before asking when we’d be there. More…

BLOG – One Change: Fuel Pulls into the Lot for Final Volunteer Appreciation Event

Tuesday, September 29, 2009, Ottawa

They say all good things come to an end. And so the One Change: Fuel pilot campaign came to an end on September 28 with our volunteer appreciation party at Bella Vista restaurant—“Home of Ottawa’s Finest Pizza.”

We had a fantastic turnout, including approximately 35 volunteers, as well as dozens of One Change: Fuel and One Change headquarters staff. The restaurant was abuzz as everyone reunited and got better acquainted. “I was a little sad to see the campaign end,” says One Change: Fuel Events Coordinator Corrie Rabbe. “But everyone was so happy to be at the party, and so proud of what we’d accomplished together, that it was hard to stay down for long.” More…

BLOG – Jonathan Chow Helps Change the World with One Change: Fuel

Saturday, September 26, 2009, Ottawa

This summer, Jonathan Chow (pictured here) decided he wanted to find a way to give back to his community. That’s not so unusual in and of itself. But Jonathan is only 10 years old. His online search led him to the One Change website where he learned about our One Change: Fuel campaign. “I decided to volunteer because I had the opportunity to help change the world,” he says. Thursday, September 24, 2009, Ottawa

When Rahima Baksh (pictured here) went to the Canadian Tire in Orleans on August 29, she expected a regular shopping expedition. Little did she know, she was sealing the deal on the first prize winning of her life.

When Rahima saw the One Change: Fuel set-up for our fuel efficiency clinic, she and her husband headed over to find out what we were all about. They were thrilled to learn we were distributing free fuel-saving digital tire gauges to help Ottawa drivers save money, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and drive safer. More…

Monday, September 21, 2009, Ottawa

One Change fuel campaign volunteers were handing out the digital tire gauges at the Canadian Tire on Merivale Road on Sept. 12. The campaign asks people to pledge to check their tire pressure once a month. Properly inflated tires gives the average driver a four per cent increase in fuel efficiency, which would save two weeks of gas over a year. The goal is to inspire people to make more small changes for the environment. More…

Once again, Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod (pictured here, right, with Canadian Tire store manager Doug Jordan) joined us to help get the show on the road. BLOG – MP Royal Galipeau Helps Empower Ottawa with the Gift of Knowledge

Friday, September 18, 2009, Ottawa

Knowledge is power. So Ottawa-Orléans MP Royal Galipeau (pictured here, second from right, with One Change: Fuel staff) believes, and he intends to share his knowledge with the rest of the community.

Mr. Galipeau first became involved with One Change during our pilot campaign, Project Porchlight. We won him over with our approach of empowering people to make small changes in their lives, and since then, Mr. Galipeau has been an ardent supporter of our organization. When the time came, he enthusiastically agreed to be involved with One Change: Fuel. More…

BLOG – Blaine Pinch Goes the Distance with One Change: Fuel

Thursday, September 17, 2009, Ottawa

“One small change in your lifestyle; one huge difference in your life.” Those are words that Blaine Pinch (pictured here) lives by, and they’ve gotten him very far. To be precise, they’ve gotten him 42.2 km.

Nearly 10 years ago, Blaine shed 80 lbs and ran the Ottawa Marathon. “I was the second-last person to finish,” says Blaine. “And I had raised over $1,000 for charity.” It’s that last part that sticks with Blaine. For him, it’s not about winning or losing. Like everything he does, what counts is taking it all one step at a time, and finding a way to make a difference by adding up all those small steps. More…

Sunday, September 13, 2009, Ottawa

It seemed every kid in Ottawa wanted to get their hands on a One Change: Fuel fake tattoo, and Sunday, September 13 was the day to do it. “As soon as I’d finished applying a tattoo, another little arm was being held out just waiting for a turn,” says Campaign Manager Deb Gleason (pictured here, left, branding young Canadian Tire customers with our Psst! tattoos). “I was scrambling to keep up!”

Saturday, September 12, 2009, Ottawa

Summer seems to be making a comeback in Ottawa! The One Change: Fuel team braved the hot sun on September 12 to do our part in ensuring the city’s vehicle owners drive safer, smarter, and cheaper. We handed out 400 free fuel-saving digital tire gauges at our latest Canadian Tire fuel efficiency clinic on Merivale Road.

Apparently the late-season heat isn’t the only thing in high demand around Ottawa. When we arrived at the Merivale Road location, Canadian Tire General Manager Tom Ogilvie told us: “People were calling yesterday and showed up early today to get their free digital tire gauge!” More…

FLOW: Canadian perspectives on energy (Calgary) – Simple solutions to a pressing challenge

Friday, September 11, 2009, Ottawa

The folks who thought up Project Porchlight, a highly-successful home-grown campaign promoting compact fluorescent light bulbs for the sake of energy efficiency; have turned their attention to the automobile. Their driving force is Stuart Hickox of Ottawa, whose One Change organization, has teamed up with private- and public-sector partners to promote tire gauges and oil changes as significant vehicle efficiency improvements.

The additional benefit of properly-inflated tires, of course, is improved road safety. More…

BLOG – Dr. Roberta Bondar Urges Ottawans to Take Action Against Climate Change at One Change/United Nations Event

Thursday, September 10, 2009, Ottawa

If anyone can appreciate the sheer beauty of our planet, it’s someone who has seen it from outer space—looked down on it from the vast expanse of the universe, seen its rivers, forests, mountains, oceans, and jungles, and truly appreciated how delicate Earth really is. Dr. Roberta Bondar (pictured here), Canada’s first female astronaut, took the time to speak to Ottawa residents on September 9 about the importance of working together to protect our planet. “Ethically, our responsibility as a life form is to try and mitigate our impact on this planet,” says Dr. Bondar. “This is not just about being a Canadian; this is about being an earthling.” More…

SOCIAL DELTA – Movements start with…well, movement.

Thursday, September 3, 2009, Ottawa

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

The Chinese philosopher, Lao-Tzu, more than 500 years before the birth of Christ, is credited with this prophetic statement. The original Chinese script has also been translated as “The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet,” but either way, the importance of this quotation for social change remains constant:

The beginning of any social change begins from an understanding of where we are, and requires us to make a simple, purposeful action.

“Psst!” More…

BLOG – Seven-Year-Old Molly Carter Brings New Energy to One Change: Fuel

Thursday, September 3, 2009, Ottawa

If you have any doubts as to whether one person can effect positive—and significant—change, young Molly Carter (pictured here) should be able to lay them to rest. The seven-year-old ball of energy has been working wonders for the One Change: Fuel campaign and isn’t ready to quit any time soon.

Molly heard about us from her father, Matt, and immediately wanted to get involved. She signed up for the Canadian Tire fuel efficiency clinic at Ogilvie Road on August 30, and couldn’t wait to get rolling. “Molly is the kind of kid who is very enthusiastic, so she jumps in with both feet,” says Matt. BLOG – Matthew Shipley Puts his Energy—and his Knowledge—to Good Use

Tuesday, September 1, 2009, Ottawa
