ONE CHANGE and PROJECT PORCHLIGHT ENEWS :: AUGUST 2010

One Change and Project Porchlight on Facebook

Exciting news! One Change has a new and improved Facebook presence. We’re moving the old Facebook group to a new Facebook page, which you can "Like" here.

You’ll notice two new features where you can share your simple actions and share your One Change story. Sharing your simple action by writing on our wall is an easy way to help others save money and protect the environment.

Another way you can help One Change and all of our campaigns like Project Porchlight and Fuel Efficiency is by helping us grow our page. Seeing as we’re a grassroots organization, we often rely on help from the network of people who have made a connection with One Change to help us get the message out that simple actions matter and to make smart choices that protect the environment. One simple action you can take is sharing the One Change Facebook page with your networks. Any help to grow our page is greatly appreciated. Simple actions matter.

Standout Volunteers - Paresh and Soham Trivedi

Paresh Trivedi,a resident of Randolph, New Jersey, emigrated to the United States 17 years ago from Gujarat, India, in search of a better life. It is not extraordinary that Paresh has indeed found a better life--millions of immigrants have shared that experience. What’s remarkable about Paresh is how much he has, in turn, given back to his community here.

Paresh (pictured here, left) and his son Soham (right) have given out an incredible 3,200 CFL bulbs to New Jersey residents! You can read Paresh and Soham's full story on the Project Porchlight blog.
Impact your community... volunteer!

Share your passion for efficiency and conservation with your neighbours! Join the Ontario fuel efficiency campaign by distributing free digital tire gauges and Canadian Tire coupons door-to-door and attending local events to spread the word that one change really can make a big difference, you’ll feel good about the positive effect you’ll have on the environment while learning new skills and making new friends. Most of all, volunteering for One Change is fun!

  Simple Actions for Summer

Get rid of that lawn. Reduce the amount of lawn in your yard by planting shrubs and ground covers appropriate to your site and region. It will save water and you won’t have to mow the grass as much. If you do decide to have a lawn, select a turf mix or blend that matches your climate and site conditions.

Keep a pitcher of water in your fridge. Instead of letting the tap run until your water cools, keep a pitcher of water in your fridge. It will also help keep your fridge keep cool more efficiently.

Water your lawn and garden in the morning. Mornings tend to be cooler so less water will be lost through evaporation. To make this action even greener, use water from your rain barrel. If water runs off your lawn, split your watering time into shorter periods to allow for better absorption.

Have a foot bath. If it’s only your feet that are dirty, fill up a basin to wash them.

Deep-soak your lawn. If you are going to water your lawn or garden, do it long enough for moisture to seep into the ground. A light sprinkling will only evaporate. Try putting out an empty tuna can when you water. You don’t need more than a one inch of water a week.

Cut your grass less. Adjust your lawnmower to cut grass to a height of 3 inches or more. Taller grass encourages deeper roots and shades the soil to reduce moisture loss. You won’t have to water as much and your lawn will look nicer.
