One Change awarded Social Innovation Enterprise of the Year Award

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

This Blue Dot campaign recognized at the 2011 Corporate and Community Social Responsibility conference

Ottawa, ON – November 16, 2011 – One Change Foundation, an award-winning Ottawa-based charity that empowers people to believe that simple actions matter and to make smart choices that protect the environment, has been awarded the Social Innovation Enterprise of the Year Award for its recent This Blue Dot campaign. The award, sponsored by the University of Ottawa and presented last night at the 2011 Corporate and Community Social Responsibility (CCSR) conference, was given to the organization that has demonstrated social, environmental or governance responsibility in the most innovative way. The This Blue Dot community engagement Ottawa pilot program was sponsored by the RBC Blue Water Project® and supported by the City of Ottawa.

“RBC is thrilled that our partnership with One Change has proven to be an effective way to raise awareness for the protection and conservation of water, a key component of our RBC Blue Water Project,” says Paul Chiasson, Regional Vice President, Ottawa East, RBC. “Our support for the organization is a reflection of our commitment to build vibrant communities and a better future for Canadians across the capital region. We congratulate them on being recognized as the Social Innovation Enterprise of the Year.”

“A team of professors at the University of Ottawa, Telfer School of Management selected One Change, in conjunction with RBC, for the University of Ottawa social innovation award because of its innovative way of engaging Ottawa residents in detecting water leaks in their homes,” said David Wright, Full Professor, Telfer School of Management. “They were also chosen because of the unique partnership created with RBC, that enabled creation and delivery of the Blue Dot program.”

This Blue Dot is a unique One Change initiative aimed at mobilizing the community to take action to prevent residential water waste and empowering people to check for toilet leaks using a free and simple-to-use vegetable-based dye tablet or ‘blue dot’. Working together, One Change and RBC developed a creative pilot campaign with a goal of distributing 40,000 blue dot, leak-detecting kits to Ottawa residents. To further help with promotion of the pilot and to highlight existing water conservation programming, the City of Ottawa was also brought on board to support the initiative through in-kind contributions. The campaign launched on September 17, 2011 at the Ottawa EcoFair and officially concluded on November 4, 2011.

“We are extremely pleased with the success of our blue dot campaign and very proud that it has been recognized with such a meaningful award,” said Stuart Hickox, President and Founder of One Change Foundation. “We are confident that the impact of our water conservation message will last well beyond the end of the campaign and we are optimistic that the program will expand to other areas across the country.”

The CCSR Awards recognize outstanding contribution and excellence by individuals and corporations in carrying out and following the core values of Social Responsibility. The Award recipients have demonstrated an ongoing and unwavering commitment to the achievement and creation of shared value for their organizations and the community.

One Change launches this blue dot campaign

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Campaign appeals for volunteers to help distribute 40,000 free water conservation kits in Ottawa over next seven weeks

Ottawa, September 17, 2011 – One Change Foundation, an award-winning Ottawa-based charity that empowers people to believe that simple actions matter and to make smart choices that protect the environment, has launched its newest campaign – this blue dot. The campaign, sponsored by the RBC Blue Water Project® and in collaboration with the City of Ottawa, was launched today at the Ottawa EcoFair. It aims to mobilize Ottawa residents to take action on residential water waste. Volunteers and One Change staff will go door to door to distribute simple kits that show people how to detect and repair common toilet leaks.

“Over 20 percent of all toilets leak and fixing one leaky toilet can save up to $250 a year on your water bill and thousands of litres of water,” said Stuart Hickox, President and Founder of One Change Foundation. “The easy-to-use dye tablet being distributed through our blue dot campaign allows people to take one simple action that can help find the leak. Fixing leaks is easy and can cost as little as $5. But we need volunteers to help us get this message out in communities across Ottawa!”

The campaign, which will run until early November, will see 40,000 blue dot kits distributed to Ottawa residents door-to-door by volunteers and through hands-on, community-oriented events. The free kits will also be available atparticipating Ottawa RBC Royal Bank branches. To complement the simple actions message, RBC will also offer a chance to win one of 27 home energy audits – worth up to $500 each. More information on the campaign and a volunteer sign-up form can be found at www.thisbluedot.ca.

“RBC is proud to partner with One Change for the launch of the blue dot campaign in the Nation’s Capital as it is the perfect example of how we can take a grass roots approach to create a culture of water stewardship,” says Paul Chiasson, Regional Vice President, Ottawa East, RBC. “We recognize the power of giving back to the communities we serve in helping to foster a better future, and this campaign aligns perfectly with our longstanding commitment to support the protection and conservation of fresh water through our RBC Blue Water Project.”

“It is great to see the City of Ottawa partnering with One Change on this important campaign to save water and money,” says David Chernushenko, councillor for Capital Ward. “There are so many ways for individuals to take action close to home, and One Change has a proven track record in mobilizing people to take simple actions that lead to others.”

One Change Launches Yukon Campaign: Saving Energy – Your Way!

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

One Change, Yukon Electrical and Yukon Energy Corporation empower residents to speak up about energy efficiency

Whitehorse, YT – June 23, 2011: One Change today kicked off a unique campaign in Yukon designed to give residents a voice regarding future electricity-saving initiatives in their communities. The campaign, sponsored by Yukon Electrical Company Limited and Yukon Energy Corporation, begins today in Old Crow, a fly-in First Nation community of 400 north of the Arctic Circle, and culminates in Whitehorse on July 1st in conjunction with Canada Day festivities.

In each community, One Change will be hosting interactive public events, providing Yukon residents with free energy efficient products and educating everyone that simple actions matter.

“During this campaign, our simple action will be listening,” said Stuart Hickox, founder and president of One Change. “We want to hear from Yukon residents about what will work in their communities and let them know that conservation is an important part of the energy solution. We are also very excited to hear what people have to say in northern communities because they are already seeing the effects of climate change. ”

“We heard very clearly from participants at our recent energy workshop that energy conservation must be an integral part of any resource planning that we do,” said Yukon Energy president David Morrison. “This community tour will give us an opportunity to talk further with Yukoners about what they’d like to see in a territory-wide energy conservation plan.”

“Yukon Electrical always welcomes an opportunity to listen to our customers,” said Dwight Redden, General Manager of Yukon Electrical Company Limited. “We need input to develop a plan that will work for our communities and give Yukoners a real stake in how we move forward on electrical conservation.”

After the campaign concludes, a summary report will be compiled and released. For a list of Yukon communities being visited, go to www.onechange.org/yukon2011/

One Change Project Porchlight Campaign Announces Volunteer-led Effort Delivering More Than 1.5 Million Energy Efficient Light Bulbs in New Jersey

Innovative Campaign to Help Residents Save More than $86 Million in Electricity Costs and Improve Air Quality

CALDWELL, New Jersey (June 2, 2011) – One Change today announced that volunteers will be distributing more than 185,000 complimentary energy efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to New Jersey residents as part of the fourth phase of its Project Porchlight campaign. The goal of the campaign, which is funded by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the Clean Energy Program ™, is to encourage individuals to use CFL bulbs to save energy and money. Upon completion of the campaign, more than 1.5 million CFL bulbs will have been distributed across the state, helping residents save more than $86 million on their electricity bills and removing the equivalent of more than 61,000 cars from local roads.

Project Porchlight is spearheaded by One Change, a nonprofit organization that organizes innovative community-based social marketing campaigns across North America to engage and empower individuals to adopt environmentally-friendly behaviors. Since 2008, One Change staff and more than 2,600 volunteers have distributed approximately 1.35 million bulbs to over 360 communities in New Jersey. As part of the fourth phase, the campaign will visit more than 45 communities and distribute CFL bulbs door-to-door as well as at 150 local community events.

“Project Porchlight has been an immensely successful campaign that has allowed us to engage directly with New Jersey residents to showcase how simple actions – such as replacing a traditional light bulb with a CFL bulb – can make an impact,” said One Change founder and president, Stuart Hickox. “We are grateful for the strong response we have received from residents and are proud to continue our work with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the Clean Energy Program to encourage even more individuals to become environmentally responsible in their daily lives.”

New Online Interactive Map for OneChange Displays the Impact of Smart Environmental Actions

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

GATINEAU, Quebec / OTTAWA, Ontario (March 1, 2011) – DBx GEOMATICS and OneChange today announced the launch of an interactive online map for OneChange, a not-for-profit foundation based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. OneChange develops and delivers action-oriented energy conservation campaigns across North America. With volunteers and community leaders, through door-to-door deliveries and at community events, OneChange empowers individuals to make smart energy saving choices that help save money and protect the environment.

OneChange has unveiled a new online mapping capability to showcase the impact of individual actions across North America. DBx GEOMATICS CartoVista was the software platform of choice used to develop the capabilities, providing a rich, customized user interface. The online map showcases various activities of OneChange, promotes local actions and events, and helps attract volunteers. The map is the externally facing component of the web-based management solution developed by DBx GEOMATICS for OneChange. The system facilitates overall campaign management and field operations requirements, allowing OneChange to manage, track and report on its multiple campaigns simultaneously.

“By backing our old fashion approach of one-on-one conversations with a sophisticated data management, inventory and mapping system, we are able to manage, track and report value to our sponsor on the millions of conversations and the distribution of millions of free energy savings measures effectively and efficiently,” says Stuart Hickox, founder and president of OneChange.

The interactive map allows users to see, through a dynamic panel, the number of conservation items delivered, the money saved and the CO2 equivalent of cars off the road by region, right down to street level. Selecting a specific location event on the map displays an information box that provides data about the event type, impact statistics, photos and links to OneChange social media postings (blog, Facebook and Twitter).

Visit www.onechange.org/interactive-map to view the online interactive map.

One Change helps cut fuel costs for Ontarians

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

OTTAWA, Ontario. Dec 15, 2010 – Thanks to almost 550 volunteers and 63 community groups, One Change informed, educated and demonstrated the importance and positive action of maintaining proper tire pressure as part of its recent Ontario fuel efficiency ‘simple actions matter’ campaign. As part of the campaign that wrapped up at the end of November, One Change engaged in conversations with over 150,000 people who also received a free digital tire gauge in over 85 communities across Ontario.

The campaign was made possible through the support of Canadian Tire and Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment. With 150,000 people checking and maintaining correct tire pressure that could mean big savings for Ontario including:

  • over $8.5 million saved,
  • emission reduction of up to 21,000 tonnes of CO2 which is the equivalent of taking 3,766 cars off the road, and
  • possible reduction in preventable traffic accidents.

In addition to knocking on doors across the province, One Change teams and volunteers hosted close to 100 free, family-friendly, hands-on fuel efficiency clinics at Canadian Tire stores across Ontario, 110 community events and over 50 street blitzes to reach people with the One Change ‘simple actions matter’ message.

The Ontario fuel efficiency campaign received very positive responses. During the 10-week campaign One Change was in the news—in print, on TV and the radio as well as around the internet on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – all which has helped spread the One Change positive action message that simple actions matter and the positive actions that we can each take to conserve energy and improve fuel efficiency.

One Change Honors Leaders for Driving Environmental Change

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Nov. 16, 2010 – One Change (www.onechange.org) announced the winners of its second annual Catalyst Awards last night at an event that celebrated community involvement and the power of conversations in driving simple actions that matter for the environment.

The One Change Catalyst Awards recognize outstanding community leaders, groups and organizations in Canada and the United States who have acted as catalysts for significant environmental action and have helped One Change grow into a grassroots phenomenon across North America. This year’s award ceremony was held in conjunction with the 2010 Behavior, Energy & Climate Change conference in Sacramento, California. The evening included a special congratulatory video to the recipients from the globally recognized, award-winning pioneer in the clean-energy economy, Van Jones, and was hosted by Darian Rodriguez Heymen, managing partner of Code Green Agency.

The 2010 award recipients are:

  • Canadian Tire Corporation – Corporate Catalyst
  • Mayor Cory A. Booker – Political Catalyst
  • Jenine Tankoos – Volunteer Catalyst
  • Matt Golden – NGO Catalyst

“At One Change, we believe that simple actions matter and the recipients of this year’s Catalyst Awards truly embody this philosophy,” said Stuart Hickox, founder and president of One Change. “Thanks to their help and support, as well as the support of so many other great people and organizations, we have proven that the One Change community engagement model works and makes a positive impact on individuals, communities and the planet.”

Canadian Tire Corporation was a key sponsor that enabled the launch of a new One Change fuel efficiency campaign in Ontario, Canada. During the campaign, 150,000 digital tire pressure gauges were delivered across the province. In addition, campaign staff and volunteers engaged 150,000 residents in a meaningful dialogue about how proper tire pressure can have a positive impact on the fuel efficiency of a vehicle.

“Canadian Tire’s commitment to sustainability is embedded in how we operate, driving innovation and profitability to benefit our customers, our business and the environment. We are proud of the work we are doing and it’s very gratifying to be recognized for our efforts by One Change,” commented Carolyn Sedgwick, manager of business sustainability, Canadian Tire Corporation.

Mayor Cory A. Booker of Newark, New Jersey has been a staunch supporter of the One Change energy efficiency program, Project Porchlight, throughout a three-year campaign where nearly 1.4 million compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs were delivered to communities across the state.

Jenine Tankoos was a standout volunteer in the New Jersey Project Porchlight campaign and was an instrumental part of a one-day blitz that brought 70 volunteers together to distribute 1,000 CFL bulbs.

“I am proud to be part of One Change’s army of dedicated volunteers who give our time because we passionately believe in One Change’s mission. I feel very fortunate and honored that One Change selected me out of many deserving volunteers to receive the Catalyst Award,” said Tankoos.

Matt Golden is an author, industry-recognized speaker, founder of energy audit software company Recurve and active board member for five NGO organizations.

“The time I invest in non-profit groups to advance residential energy efficiency is truly a labor of love. It feels great to be at the crossroads of a market that can have huge impacts on the environment, while also creating a multitude of jobs in a hard hit industry. I appreciate the recognition for the hard work that has gotten us to this point, but I also want to remind everyone that we are just getting started!” remarked Golden.

Maintaining tire pressure reduces emissions, saves gas and makes for a safer drive

Today, One Change and Canadian Tire kicked into high gear with a fuel efficiency campaign that will distribute more than 150,000 free digital tire gauges to Ontarians. This unique project presented by One Change, a not-for-profit environmental organization, and sponsored by Canadian Tire, empowers drivers to make a meaningful difference for the environment through simple actions, including keeping tires properly inflated. The digital tire gauges will be available at various events at Canadian Tire locations and distributed door-to-door by One Change volunteers. The campaign that began in September has already handed out over 50,000 free digital tire gauges and will continue distribution through to the first week of November.

“Our goal with this initiative is to inform drivers that keeping your tires properly inflated is directly linked with reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions,” says One Change founder and executive director Stuart Hickox. “Each digital tire gauge will help cut 140 kg of CO2 emissions and can help car owners save up to two weeks worth of fuel a year .”

If every Canadian driver kept their tires properly inflated Canada could save more than $600 million in fuel and cut 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 . That is the equivalent of 257 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“As Canada’s leader in all things automotive we are uniquely positioned to educate drivers on how they can properly and safely maintain their vehicles and improve their vehicle’s fuel efficiency to save gas and reduce emissions,” explains Allan MacDonald, Senior Vice-President of Automotive for Canadian Tire. “Coming into the winter driving season it is key for drivers to switch to winter tires and check their tire pressure, so our partnership with One Change to educate drivers is a natural fit, and also demonstrates our commitment to sustainability.”
